Fences, insects, embroideries

Utställning och workshop. Wien, sept. 2022

Textiles are always around us, and it is easy to relate to them. Textile works are women’s history and can be seen as storytellers of the present. They carry our personal views but also a common view of a current event. The embroideries we show are from our project Transformation are on the way and carry our voices.

In the shadow of the big events stand people who are affected by the urban transformation. How do we deal with grief over what we lose? Can we use our hands and stories to have a dialogue about grief and loss? By sharing experiences with each other and translating them into textile works, we preserve memories and document a complex and painful process.

We wanted to work based on a positive view of urban transformation, look beyond the horizon, find something that may feel difficult to deal with today. It has been a way of processing, turning ideas upside down, finding new paths. There is a lot of sadness in some pictures, but also a lot of joy and hope. We wanted to see the future and the positives that come with it. With the help of the embroideries, we wanted to capture an event in time and create new arenas to meet the audience.
